Hearing Journey FAQs

Why do I hear my voice so prominently?

Your voice may sound echoey, hollow, or louder than expected at first. This happens because you are creating a seal in your ear to ensure no air escapes. When air can escape, feedback is created — that's why it's important to find a tight, snug fit. You will naturally adjust to the sound of your own voice over 2–4 weeks — this is known as the occlusion effect in the audiology world.

How long does it take to adjust?

There is a short adjustment period — typically 2 to 4 weeks. Your brain is re-learning how to process sounds it hasn't heard clearly in a while, so things may feel different before they feel natural.

Is it okay to take listening breaks?

Yes — this is encouraged. Start with a few hours a day and build up over time. Taking breaks helps prevent fatigue while your brain adjusts, but wearing them consistently each day is what drives progress.

Why do everyday sounds feel so loud or sharp?

Sounds like dishes, footsteps, or running water may seem unusually noticeable at first. These sounds were likely reduced before, and now your brain is becoming aware of them again.

Why am I noticing sounds I didn't hear before?

You're not actually hearing "new" sounds — you're hearing sounds that were always there but previously too soft to notice. Over time, your brain will learn which sounds are important and which to tune out.

Why is background noise harder at first?

Your brain needs time to rebuild the skill of focusing on speech in noisy environments. This is one of the most complex parts of hearing, and it improves with practice — not instantly.

Does filtering noise get easier?

Yes — think of it like training your brain. The more you wear your hearing aids in everyday environments, the better your brain becomes at filtering background noise and focusing on conversation.

What if I feel overwhelmed or frustrated?

That's completely normal. Adjusting to hearing more can feel like a lot at first, but it's a sign your brain is working. Most people notice steady improvement as they stay consistent. Remember, listening breaks are encouraged — but effort equals progress.

How often should I wear my hearing aids?

Wear them for as many hours as you can comfortably tolerate each day. It's completely okay if your endurance builds over time — take breaks when needed. The more you wear them, the faster your brain adjusts.

What if something doesn't feel right or I'm not improving?

Progress with hearing aids often comes from small wins, not overnight changes. You might notice you're turning the TV down, asking people to repeat themselves less, or picking up sounds like birds chirping — or even the refrigerator humming. These are signs your hearing is improving. If something still doesn't feel quite right, small adjustments can make a big difference. Our Audien Sound Check or a hearing specialist can help guide you and make sure you're set up for success.

What is the difference between Hearing Profiles and Environmental Modes?

A Hearing Profile adjusts the frequency and tones of the sound coming through your device. You can select one of the 6 hearing profiles pre-programmed into the device, accessible via the "Device" tab in your Ion Pro 2 app. Environmental Modes adjust the decibel levels coming through the hearing aids, tailored to different environments.

Do I need to use the app to adjust the volume of my hearing aids?

No, you may use the volume rocker button on the back of the hearing aid body to manually adjust your volume at any time. To increase the volume, press up on the top portion of the rocker. To decrease the volume, press down on the bottom portion of the rocker.

How frequently should I be changing my wax guards?

For all Audien hearing aids, we recommend replacing the wax guard every 2–4 weeks depending on your ear wax production. Even if you don't produce much wax, it's best practice to check the wax guard at least every other week to ensure there is no buildup.

Do I have to connect my Ion Pro 2 to my phone's Bluetooth in order to use the app?

No, you do not need to connect the Ion Pro 2 to your phone's Bluetooth in order to use the app. However, you won't be able to select a hearing profile until Bluetooth is connected. Connecting to your phone's Bluetooth also allows you to take calls and stream music or videos through your hearing aids.

Does utilizing Hands-Free Streaming affect the battery life of the hearing aids?

Yes, using Hands-Free Streaming does decrease battery life. A typical expectation when utilizing this feature is approximately 8–12 hours of battery life.

Atom X

Do I need a smartphone to use this product?

No, you don't need a smartphone to use this product. We invented case control technology for this reason specifically — so you get the convenience of changing your volume and environmental modes with just the tap of a screen. No app, no hassle, just simplicity. The device can also be connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth for those interested in that feature.

How do I connect my Atom X to my phone's Bluetooth?

To connect your Atom X to your phone's Bluetooth, simply press the Bluetooth icon on the Atom X case. When the icon turns blue, it is ready to connect. Then open the Settings app on your phone, navigate to Bluetooth settings, and under "Discoverable Devices" select the Atom X. If it is not found, toggle your phone's Bluetooth off and back on again.

How long does it take to charge my Atom X?

To fully charge your Atom X in the charging case without it plugged in takes 2–4 hours. With the case plugged in, it should take about 2 hours to fully charge.

How many times can I charge my Atom X with just the case before needing to recharge it?

You can charge your Atom X with the case 3–4 times depending on how often you are using the case controls. This typically takes 2–4 hours to fully charge the hearing aids from the case's power alone.

Does Hands-Free Streaming lower my battery life?

Yes. When utilizing Hands-Free Streaming — whether for phone calls or listening to music/videos — the hearing aids' battery life is reduced from 24 hours to roughly 8–12 hours depending on usage. This is expected behavior and nothing to worry about. To get the full 24 hours of hearing aid life, turn off Bluetooth on the Atom X by clicking the Bluetooth icon. If the icon is grey, Bluetooth is off. If it is illuminated blue, Bluetooth is on.

Case / Touch Controls Not Responding

  1. Confirm the hearing aids are not mixed and matched. If you have multiple devices in your home, make sure the hearing aids stay with the case they came with.

Atom Pro 2

How do I change the volume?

You can change the volume by tapping the button on the base of the hearing aid. The hearing aid will then play the number of "beeps" correlated to your current volume level. (e.g., If you tap the button and hear 3 beeps, you are on volume 3.)

How do I change the mode?

You can change the mode by pressing and holding the button on the base of the hearing aid for 3 seconds. The hearing aid will then play the number of "boops" correlated to the environmental mode. (e.g., If you press and hold the button for 3 seconds and hear 3 boops, you are in environmental mode 3.)

How can I tell if the hearing aids are fully charged?

To tell if the hearing aids are fully charged, open the lid of the charging case while the hearing aids are inside. Then press the small button on the back of the charging case (it is flush with the case) — the lights inside the charging case will illuminate either red or green. If the lights are red, the hearing aids are not fully charged. If the lights are green, the hearing aids are fully charged.

How do I know how much battery the charging case has?

To tell how much charge the case has, press the button on the back of the charging case (it is flush with the case). The lights on the front of the case will illuminate green. Each light that illuminates represents 25% of charge. (e.g., If 2 of the 4 lights on the case are illuminated, your case has 50% battery.)

How do I change the wax guards?

To change the wax guards on your Atom Pro 2, first remove the ear dome (the rubber tip that goes into your ear). Once removed, you will see a small white filter at the tip of the hearing aid. In the accessories portion of your box, you will find a 4-piece wax guard tool kit. Use the blank end (the one without a white filter) and insert the nub into the center of the wax guard on your device. Once the tool has been inserted, gently pull the tool away from the

device to remove the wax guard. To place the new wax guard, turn the tool around and insert the new white filter into the tip of the hearing aid, then gently pull back at an angle. The new wax guard is now installed. (Video tutorial: Atom Pro 2 Changing The Wax Guards | Audien Hearing)
